Tuesday, August 17th, 2010

Check out this video from the Goodwood Festival of Speed 2010, featuring 1960s rally legends Paddy Hopkirk and Rauno Aaltonen talking about Minis past, present and future. Gert Hildebrand, head of design at BMW Mini, discusses his first visit to the festival and introduces the new Mini Countryman.

Lottery winner’s driving ambition

Saturday, August 14th, 2010

What’s the first thing you’d do if you won the lottery? This week Stacey Bywater of Holmfirth in Yorkshire scooped £1.1 million with a lucky dip ticket and announced that she was going to splash out on a brand new Mini convertible. The only thing is, she needs to pass her driving test first…

At 18 years old Stacey is one of Britain’s youngest lottery winners. She shared the jackpot with four other ticket holders.

Having already shown herself to be a young woman of excellent taste, Stacey also proved her good sense by heading straight back to work on Monday morning. Other items on her shopping list include a new family home, a holiday in Turkey and a grand celebration for her father’s 50th birthday.

And the good news is – you don’t actually have to be a lottery millionaire to afford a new BMW Mini. Contact Bond Street Select to find out more about deals on all the models in the current Mini range.

Mini confirms entry to WRC

Sunday, August 8th, 2010

The cat is officially out of the bag: Mini will make its long-awaited return to rallying next year. After many months of rumours and speculation, BMW Mini made the official announcement that rally legends Prodrive are developing a car based on the new Countryman crossover.

The car will compete in a selected number of races in 2011 – probably around half of the World Rally Championship – before taking on the full WRC in 2012.

The company’s ambitious goal is to secure the world title for BMW Mini within three years.

Prodrive has previously won WRC titles with Colin McRae and Richard Burns, driving the Subaru Impreza.

The modified Countryman will meet the new WRC regulations that come into force next year. It will be powered by a 1.6 litre, four-cylinder turbo engine made by BMW Motorsport, matched with Mini’s new All4 four-wheel drive system.

Facelift for 2010 Minis

Tuesday, July 20th, 2010

Details of the latest makeover for the BMW Mini range have been announced. All existing models of the Mini benefit from design changes to both the exterior and interior. A new front bumper gives Mini a new face as well as improving protection for pedestrians. There are also changes to the fog lights, headlights and side indicators.

The tail and brake lights are now LEDs, and the brake lights will pulse depending on how hard you brake – meaning that drivers following behind can gauge the urgency of your manoeuvre.

Mini buyers can choose from five new paint colours – Ice Blue, Spice Orange, British Racing Green II, Eclipse Gray Metallic and Velvet Silver Metallic – and five new alloy wheel designs.

The new Mini models are subtlety different, yet distinctive – they go on sale from 18th September here in the UK.

iPod Out and about in your Mini

Sunday, July 11th, 2010

BMW Mini has just announced that it will be using new technology to fully integrate its in-car entertainment systems with iPhones and iPods.

Apple’s new iPod Out feature allows your iPhone or iPod to integrate with an outside system, such as that in your BMW or Mini. The idea is that it’ll be just like using your iPod, but on the console screen inside the car.

Drivers of future BMWs and Minis will be able to browse their music using the classic iPod interface, as well as see artist info and album art.

You’ll also be able to use iPod Out for custom playlists and the Genius system, which automatically creates ’smart playlists’.

To use iPod Out in your Mini you’ll need an iPhone or iPod that runs Apple’s iOS 4.

BMW’s Mini Connected project aims to improve software and entertainment options without increasing the risks of driver distraction.

Mini to join World Rally Championship?

Monday, June 28th, 2010

Rumours are still circulating that BMW Mini will be taking part in the World Rally Championship from 2012, racing the new Mini Countryman crossover.

Mini has been linked with the highly successful Prodrive group, a British car technology company based in Oxfordshire.

Mini of course has a proud history in rally racing going back to the 1960s. While Prodrive won six WRC titles with the Subaru World Rally Team and also led Aston Martin to back to back wins at Le Mans in 2007 and 2008.

So this could prove to be a very fruitful partnership indeed. We’ll just have to wait and see what happens next…

The regular, non-racing Mini Countryman will be available to buy, from Bond Street Select, from September 2010.

Minis to star at Goodwood

Thursday, June 24th, 2010

Minis old and new are set to star at the 2010 Goodwood Festival of Speed. The annual FoS runs from 2nd to 4th July 2010 at Lord March’s estate in West Sussex.

First up, the festival will host the first ever Mini E race held in the UK.

The race will feature a modified version of the emissions free Mini which is currently being trialled in the UK and overseas. The event gives BMW Mini a chance to showcase the potential of the environmental friendly electric car.

Also at the Festival of Speed, rallying legend Rauno Aaltonen – one of the original ‘Flying Finns’ – will drive the Forest Rally stage in a classic Mini Cooper S. It’s the same Mini in which he won the 1965 RAC rally.
